Chemical Peel - Treatment Purpose

Chemical Peels are great for dull, tired looking skin, discolored skin (e.g. pregnancy mask) and fine lines. They are also a good choice for reducing acne breakouts.
Chemical peels exfoliate your skin (remove the outer most layers of your skin) revealing the fresh underlying layers and stimulate growth of new skin cells.
Depending upon the strength of your Chemical Peel, and the technique used by your provider, you may experience excessively dry, flaky skin. In some cases your skin may peel off in dime or quarter sized pieces.

Chemical Peel - Consent for Treatment

Informed consent documents are used to communicate information about the proposed cosmetic treatment along with disclosure of risks and alternative forms of treatment(s). Despite Chemical Peels high level of efficacy and safety, it is not free of side effects. As a patient you have the right to be informed about your treatment so that you may make the decision whether to proceed with the Chemical Peels treatment or decline after knowing the risks involved. This disclosure is to inform you about the risks, side effects and possible complications related to the Chemical Peels prior to your treatment. This disclosure should not be considered all-inclusive in defining other methods of care and risks encountered. Spa 35 may provide you with additional or different information which is based on all the facts in your particular case and the state of medical knowledge.

Chemical Peel - Risks and Treatment Experience

There are both risks, and complications associated with Chemical Peels. Although the majority of patients do not experience these complications, you should understand the risks and potential complications of Chemical Peels.
Redness- It is common and expected that your skin will be red and possibly itchy and/or irritated.
Skin breakout/acne/rash- Skin may react with a breakout, acne or a rash.
Dark spots- Dark spots can become darker after a chemical peel.
Swelling and bruising- Although rare, swelling and bruising can happen following a chemical peel.
Retinoic Acid- If Retinoic Acid is used as part of your treatment, your skin will have a light-yellow tinge immediately after the procedure. This is temporary and will fade in 1 to 2 hours.
Lack of Effect- Although most people experience peeling of their facial skin, not every client notices that their skin peels after a Chemical Peel procedure. Lack of peeling is NOT an indication that the peel was unsuccessful. If you do not notice actual peeling, please know that you are still receiving all the benefits of the Chemical Peel, such as: stimulation of collagen production, improvement of skin tone and texture, and diminishment of fine lines and pigmentation.

There are a number of reasons why you may not have peeling or may experience minimum peeling. The reasons may include:
• Having peels regularly with a short interval between peels
• Frequent use of Retin-A, AHA, or other peeling agents prior to the Chemical Peel treatment
• Severe sun damage
Chemical Peel may not be appropriate for you if you have the following conditions:
Pregnant or breastfeeding; aspirin or phenol allergy; active cold sores, warts, open wounds or history of herpes simplex virus; Accutane use within the past 12 months; Medications that cause photosensitivity; Currently undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy; history of autoimmune disease or any condition that may weaken the immune system; excessively sensitive skin, dermatitis, rosacea or current sunburn.

Chemical Peel - Pre Treatment Instructions

Please follow some simple guidelines before your treatment. These guidelines can reduce possible side effects associated with the procedure and make all the difference between a fair result and a great result.
Sun exposure- Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least 4 weeks prior to your treatment. Your appointment will be rescheduled if needed.
Hydrate- We recommend that for 7 days pre-treatment you moisturize skin in the morning and evening, drink at least 8 glasses of water per day to completely hydrate your skin.
Tanning Beds- Avoid tanning beds or applying self-tanner for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
Retin A- Topical Retin-A therapy should be discontinued 3-4 days prior to treatment.
Other exfoliating products- Renova, Differin (Adapalene 0.1%), Tazorac, Benzoyl Peroxide or any other exfoliating products two to three days prior to your chemical peel.
Accutane- Inform your practitioner if you have taken Accutane (oral acne medication) in the past year.
Special Events- Schedule your treatment at least four weeks prior to a special event i.e., wedding, vacation, speaking engagement, to allow time for the healing process.

Chemical Peel - Treatment Day Instructions

Make-up- Please arrive for your appointment without make-up.
Clothing- Wear comfortable clothing with an open collar.

Chemical Peel - Post Treatment Instruction

Cleanse- Cleanse your face with water or a mild cleanser such as Obagi Gentle Cleanser morning and night. When washing your face, do not scrub. Use a gentle cleanser and apply a light moisturizer as often as needed to relieve dryness and tightness.
Moisturize- Apply a moisturizer such as Aquaphor or Triple antibiotic ointment to the treated area for the first three days morning and night. This helps prevent over-drying out of the fresh skin
Sunscreen- It is imperative that you use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 20 and avoid direct sunlight for at least 1 week.
Redness- Your skin may be more red than usual for 2 to 3 days. Please avoid strenuous exercise during this time.
Peeling- Approximately 48 hours after the treatment, your skin will start to peel. This peeling will generally last 2 to 5 days. DO NOT peel, rub, or scratch your skin at anytime, whatsoever. This WILL cause damage and compromise your results as well as possibly cause severe scarring.
If you experience painful areas of the face, contact your skin care therapist immediately, especially if you are prone to cold sores. Any blisters that form will need to be reported immediately.
Facial treatments- Do not have any other facial treatments for at least one week after your peel.
Resuming Skincare products- Do NOT apply any type of glycolic acid or exfoliation products as this can severely damage or irritate the skin during the entire healing process. You may resume the regular use of Retin-A, Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) products or bleaching creams only after you are finished peeling.
Acne breakout – you may experience an acne breakout after your chemical peel.

Chemical Peel - Treatment schedule

We recommend re-treatment no sooner than every 4 weeks.

Chemical Peel - Alternative Treatments

Alternative procedures include no treatment, Intense Pulse Light Therapy, CO2 laser resurfacing, Pixel resurfacing, Picoway Resolve treatment, Aminolevulenic Acid treatment, topical skin care (both non-prescription and prescription). More than one Chemical Peel session may be necessary to achieve desired results. However, other treatments, including skin care products, are often needed to reduce sun damage, and give the best results. Risks and potential complications are associated with alternative forms of treatment that involve skin treatments or cosmetic procedures.

Chemical Peel - Synergistic Treatments

Chemical Peels help with treating the texture and appearance of the skin due to sun damage, aging, acne and melasma. Other skin changes can also lead to an aged appearance and you may want to consider some of these treatments after your Chemical Peel.
CO2 Laser Resurfacing – Tightens skin and reduces lines and rough texture
Profound RF Tightening – Rebuilds strength and thickness of your dermis to tighten skin
Sublative - A radio frequency resurfacing procedure that is ideal for the area around the eyes and for people with darker skin complexion.
Botox and Dysport – Decreases appearance of lines caused by muscle movement. Usually used around the eyes and in the upper face.
Dermal fillers – Replaces or enhances facial volume. Lips and cheeks are two common areas treated.
