Lip and Cheek Injections - Treatment Purpose

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular, non-surgical options for solving signs of facial aging caused by changes in facial volume. Typical treatment areas include the lips, cheeks, and nasolabial folds. Dermal fillers are also used in the temples and hands.
Facial aging can change the proportions of the face with decreasing volume in the upper face and thinner lips developing over time. Dermal fillers are excellent solutions for these common changes in the face. Lip injections increase lip fullness is a foundational cosmetic treatment. Cheek injections can restore facial proportions and decrease the appearance of nasolabial folds (folds around the mouth and nose). Dermal fillers can also be used to replace lost volume due to localize injury (e.g. a scar) or to replace lost dermal function that causes static lines in the face, such as crow’s feet that are visible without muscle movement.
Dermal fillers are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth lines and enhance facial contours. Results typically last 6 to 12 months or longer, depending on the selected dermal filler, the treatment area and the individual.
There are many dermal fillers available in the United States. Common Hyaluronic Acid based fillers include Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma, Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Defyne and Restylane Kysse. Each dermal filler has specific approvals from the FDA for cosmetic purposes that can vary by product. Your treatment may include areas outside of the specific FDA approved areas. A common medical practice referred to as “off-label use”.
You are encouraged to request and read the patient labeling information from the dermal filler manufacturer.

Lip and Cheek Injections - Consent for Treatment

Informed consent documents are used to communicate information about the proposed cosmetic treatment along with disclosure of risks and alternative forms of treatment(s). Despite high levels of efficacy and safety Dermal Fillers are not free of side effects. As a patient you have the right to be informed about your treatment so that you may make the decision whether to proceed with the treatment or decline treatment after knowing the risks involved. This disclosure is to inform you about the risks, side effects and possible complications related to Dermal Fillers prior to your treatment. This disclosure should not be considered all-inclusive in defining other methods of care and risks encountered. Spa 35 may provide you with additional or different information which is based on all the facts in your particular case and the state of medical knowledge.

Lip and Cheek Injections - Risks and Treatment Experience

Dermal fillers are typically approved by the FDA for use in cosmetic treatments for moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose, mouth and/or cheeks. This treatment is temporary, and re-injection is necessary Other temporary and more permanent treatments may be available.
You can read additional information on dermal filler risk from the FDA at this webpage https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/filling-wrinkles-safely
As dermal fillers are not an exact science, there might be an uneven appearance of the face with some areas more affected by the fillers than others. In most cases this uneven appearance can be corrected by more injections in the same or nearby areas. However, in some cases this uneven appearance can persist for several weeks or months.
This list is not meant to be inclusive of all possible risks associate with dermal fillers as there are both known and unknown side effects associated with any medication or procedure.
The amount injected is an estimate of the amount of dermal filler required to add volume to the skin and give the appearance of a smoother face. More than one injection or syringe of product may be needed to achieve a satisfactory result. There is no guarantee of results of any treatment and regular charge applies to all subsequent treatments.
Potential risks and experiences include, but are not limited to:
Bruising, redness, swelling- Pain at the injection site, tenderness, itching, and raised bumps of skin (nodules) can occur. These side effects are usually mild and typically last a few days but can last up to a few months. In rare cases, bruising can last several months and even be permanent.
Infections- Post treatment bacterial, viral and/or fungal infections can occur. Most cases are easily treatable but in rare cases permanent scarring can occur. If you have a history of Herpes Simplex Virus (cold sores), virus reactivation can be provoked by direct needle insertion.
Allergic Reaction- In rare cases, there may be an allergic reaction to the dermal filler product including any analgesic agents (Lidocaine or similar numbing agent). The allergic reaction may lead to a severe reaction (anaphylactic shock) that requires emergency medical help.
Scarring- There is a risk of scarring.
Vision impairment- Blurred vision, partial vision loss, and blindness if the dermal filler is inadvertently injected into a blood vessel.
Numbing agent reactions- Your skin may be numbed using an analgesic agent(s) as part of your procedure. Analgesics typically include but are not limited to benzocaine, lidocaine and tetracaine (BLT). BLT is a central nervous system depressant and has risks including, but not limited to: numbness, tingling, vertigo, restlessness, seizures, tremors, convulsions, tachycardia, and even death.
Most side effects occur shortly after injection and go away within two weeks. In some cases, side effects may emerge weeks, months, or years later.

Lip and Cheek Injections - Pre Treatment Instructions

It is prudent to follow some simple guidelines before your treatment. These guidelines can reduce possible side effects associated with the procedure and make all the difference between a fair result and a great result.
Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages- Avoid at least 24 hours prior to treatment. These beverages may thin the blood and increase bruising.
Over the Counter Medications- Avoid aspirin, Motrin and Ibuprofen for one week prior to your treatment. Inform your provider if you are taking blood thinners or regularly take aspirin or Ibuprofen.
Prescription Medications- If you have a history of cold sores, we will provide you with a prescription for an antiviral prophylaxis medication (e.g. Valtrex). Usually you will start the medication 1 day prior to treatment and continue for 5 days (follow the specific directions on the prescription bottle). If you develop a cold sore, lesion or rash, etc. prior to your appointment, you must reschedule.
Supplements- Avoid fish oil, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, or any other supplements one week before treatment.
SinEcch (Arnica Montana)- SinEcch is an over the counter oral supplement that may decrease your risk of bruising from your injections. Ask your provider it is appropriate for you.
Special Events- Schedule your treatment at least 2-3 weeks prior to a special event i.e., wedding, vacation, speaking engagement, to allow time for the healing process. Bruising is always possible with injections, plan for time to heal before a special event. We recommend no dental visit or antibiotics for 2 weeks before or after getting filler.

Lip and Cheek Injections - Treatment Day Instructions

Make-up- Please arrive for your appointment without make-up. Bring make-up for after your treatment if you plan to return to work or daily activities.
SinEcch- If you choose to purchase SinEcch follow the instructions for the day of your injection and the hours after your treatment.

Lip and Cheek Injections - Post Treatment Instructions

Remain upright- Do not lie down on your side for 6 hours after treatment to avoid pressure on the treated area(s) and avoid the risk of moving the filler.
Avoid Exercise- Avoid rigorous exercise, extensive sun or heat exposure, massages and facials for the first 24 hours after treatment.
Treatment Area- Do not massage or apply pressure to the treated area for 24 hours after treatment. In order to allow the dermal filler to stabilize, avoid overly excessive movements of the muscles in your face for the first couple of days, especially during the first 6 hours after treatment.
Avoid- Avoid taking Aspirin, Aleve, Advil, Vitamin E, Ginger, Ginko, Bilboa, Ginseng, and Garlic for 24 hours. You may shower and do most other regular daily activities.
Bruising- If you develop bruising it will resolve like other bruises you have had in the past. Some people’s bruises resolve in 2 days, others resolve in 2 weeks.
Swelling, Redness and Itching- Occasionally, mild pain, swelling, itching, or redness may occur at the injection site(s). Redness may last for 1-2 days, rarely longer. Swelling in the lips usually lasts for 2 days but can last up to 1 week. The lips may appear uneven until the swelling subsides. You may apply cold compresses to reduce swelling or for discomfort. You may apply make-up lightly after treatment with a clean makeup sponge (we have them, please ask). Cold compresses may be used 10 minutes on/10 minutes off to reduce swelling 2-3x per day, if needed.
Monitor for Full Results- Most patients are pleased with the quick results of Dermal Filler. However, like any cosmetic procedure, there is no guarantee that wrinkles and folds will disappear or that volume will be fully restored. You may require additional filler to achieve your desired results. (A general way of thinking about fillers: one syringe is usually needed for each decade of life for full correction results).

Lip and Cheek Injections - Treatment Schedule

While the effects of filler can last 6-12 months, the cosmetic impact is temporary. Additional injections will be required periodically, generally every 6-12 months to maintain optimal result.

Lip and Cheek Injections - Alternative Treatment Options

There may be other treatment options available such as laser ablation, surgical insertion of facial implants and face lifts. Alternative forms of treatment are all associated with certain and varying risks.

Lip and Cheek Injections - Synergistic Cosmetic Treatments

Dermal fillers help with the loss of facial or lip volume that occurs during the aging process. Other skin changes usually occur with volume loss. These includes age spots or other skin discoloration, rough texture, loss of skin tensile strength (laxity), and decreased elasticity. Cosmetic procedures that can help with these signs of aging include IPL, CO2 Laser Resurfacing, Profound RF Tightening, Sublative RF Resurfacing and other energy-based treatments.
